چکیده
This paper surveys the recent literature on convergence across countries and regions. We discuss the main convergence and divergence mechanisms identified in the literature and develop a simple model that illustrates their implications for income dynamics. We then review the existing empirical evidence and discuss its theoretical implications. Early optimism concerning the ability of a human capital-augmented neoclassical model to explain productivity differences across economies has been questioned on the basis of more recent contributions that make use of panel data techniques and obtain theoretically implausible results. Some recent research in this area tries to reconcile these findings with sensible theoretical models by exploring the role of alternative convergence mechanisms and the possible shortcomings of panel data techniques for convergence analysis. ______________________ * This paper was prepared for the 2000 European Investment Bank Conference on Economics and Finance: Regional development policy and convergence in the EU. Selection for rate and efficiency of lean gain in the rat.
Full-sib family selection for rate (WP) or efficiency (WP/F) of protein gain in rats from 3 to 9 weeks of age was applied for five generations. Three rats per litter were killed to estimate carcass protein. Standardized response/cumulative selection for WP was .19+/-.10 for WP, .28+/-.10 for 3- to 9-week gain .28+/-.08 for 9-week weight, .16+/-.08 for litter size, .22+/-.12 for skinning loss an...
متن کاملVariable methylation of the Epstein-Barr virus Wp EBNA gene promoter in B-lymphoblastoid cell lines.
During the initial stages of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection of peripheral resting B cells, transcription of the six genes encoding the EBV latency-associated nuclear antigens (EBNAs) is driven from Wp, a promoter that is present in multiple copies within the EBV major internal repeat. As infection progresses, transcription from Wp is downregulated following upregulation of EBNA gene transcr...
متن کاملExperimental Comparison of Efficiency of First Aid Dressings in Burning White Phosphorus on Bacon Model
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to determine effectiveness of first aid dressings in extinguishing burning white phosphorous (WP), eliminating WP pieces from the surface, inhibiting re-ignition on the model (fresh bacon covered with military uniform), and preventing from late re-ignition caused by persistent WP pieces. MATERIAL AND METHODS Burning WP was extinguished with several dressin...
متن کاملGeneral Wp-bailey Chains
Motivated by a recent paper of Liu and Ma, we describe a number of general WP-Bailey chains. We show that many of the existing WP-Bailey chains (or branches of the WP-Bailey tree), including chains found by Andrews, Warnaar and Liu and Ma, arise as special cases of these general WP-Bailey chains. We exhibit three new branches of the WP-Bailey tree, branches which also follow as special cases of...
متن کاملIrreducible Coxeter Groups
We prove that an infinite irreducible Coxeter group cannot be a non-trivial direct product. Let W be a Coxeter group, and write W = W1 × · · · ×Wp ×Wp+1, where W1, . . . ,Wp are infinite irreducible Coxeter groups, and Wp+1 is a finite one. As an application of the main result, we obtain that W1, . . . ,Wp are unique and Wp+1 is unique up to isomorphism. That is, if W = W̃1 × · · · × W̃q × W̃q+1 i...
